From 2005 to 2017, there were 350 weather-related disasters. In the 20 years from 1997 to 2017, flooding made up nearly 50% of natural disasters and resulted in 157,000 deaths around the world. While the unpredictability of natural disasters is often what makes them so devastating, there are preparedness strategies that can keep homes and inhabitants safer. Because flooding is the result of waterways overfilling from too much water, cleaning out gutters can help minimise damage and allow water to flow through easily. Additionally, raising electrical systems and protecting HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) systems will also prevent injuries if water enters the home.

From 1997 to 2017, storms and earthquakes made up a combined 41% of natural disasters, and had devastating results. Utilising preparedness strategies can prevent loss of households and life due to storms and earthquakes. Having a concrete foundation, keeping away from windows and securing large furniture are all steps that can be taken to make houses safer during storms and earthquakes and improve outcomes.

The Aid and International Development Forum with host the Global Disaster Relief and Development Summit on 5-6 September 2018 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. The Summit will gather industry experts to share best practice and technology to enhance disaster preparedness and strengthen disaster management capacities. Participants will also look into how to manage climate-related disaster risks more effectively and technological innovations used to better reach and engage communities.
